Assistant Superintendent of Schools Mrs. Carol Napolitano
According to Webster’s New World College Dictionary, “Education is the process of training and developing the knowledge, skill, mind, character, etc. by formal schooling.”
As Assistant Superintendent of Schools for the Liberty School District, my main focus is naturally academics. Sometimes we view academics as the whole purpose for attending school. While this is true, other elements including music, art, theater, technology and sports play integral roles in shaping a child’s future. This is accomplished through teamwork, building self-esteem and giving students responsibilities. These elements compliment the academic curriculum. Imagine a school without instruments playing, artwork being created, voices singing or technology being utilized – imagine an empty stage. The goal of getting every Liberty student to meet higher standards and graduate with a regents diploma demands commitment and resolve, as well as an unprecedented investment of time, energy, creativity and resources at the national, state and local levels. Be assured that we are committed to this goal.
Mission of Liberty Central School District: Liberty Central School District is committed to inspire all students to pursue their dreams and to contribute and thrive in a diverse community.
At Liberty, we continually strive to revise and improve our curriculum and instruction. Our students are receiving quality instruction by highly qualified teachers using programs aligned to the New York State Standards. In the late 1990’s when the State Education Department developed new State Standards and State Assessments, Liberty Central School District began to develop curriculum maps to help provide teachers with an outline of the key concepts, skills and assessments that should be taught in order to address the State standards. Each summer, teachers are involved in revising and refining their curriculum maps. The revisions are based on assessment data and the pacing of teaching the curriculum to our students for understanding. The curriculum maps are an on-going work in progress. Parents may find these very useful to follow the topics that the students will be learning. These may be accessed by the Curriculum Map link.
General Information about the New York State Testing Program
It is the New York State Education Department's responsibility to set student learning expectations (standards) for what all students should know and be able to do as a result of skilled instruction. It is the responsibility of each local school district to develop curricula based on these NYS Learning Standards, select textbooks and instructional materials, develop pacing charts for learning (scope and sequence), and provide professional development for staff to ensure that all students have access to instruction leading to attainment of these learning standards.
The New York State Testing Program is designed to evaluate the implementation of the State’s Learning Standards at the student, school, district and State levels. To meet the requirements of the No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB), tests in English language arts and mathematics are administered annually at each grade level in Grades 3 through 8. Parent's Guide to NY Tests Grades 3-8 and Testing Schedule 3-8 schedule 2009 2010.pdf. At the high school level, the New York State Regents Examinations are administered to in order to meet the NCLB standard using the schedule Regents Exam Schedule 2009 2011.pdf. The State Assessments serve as a measure of student progress. The Grades 3 through 8 tests provide information about the students’ preparedness for the next grade level, while the Regents examinations verify that students are prepared with the knowledge and skills necessary for high school graduation.
As New York State phases in new graduation requirements, educational demands differ from grade level to grade level. Guidance Counselors are available to meet with students and their parents to discuss these requirements and assist with course scheduling. Certain safety net provisions for some students are available. Please click here for the Graduation Requirements.
English Language Arts
Language is the most powerful, most readily available tool we have for representing the world to ourselves and ourselves to the world. Language is not only a means of communication; it is a primary instrument of thought, a defining feature of culture, and an unmistakable mark of personal identity. The English Language Arts curriculum in Liberty Central School District expands upon the learning standards established by the New York State Department of Education. The four standards clearly show the interdependence of the skills of reading, writing, speaking and listening.
Standard 1: Students will read, write, listen, and speak for information and understanding.
Standard 2: Students will read, write, listen, and speak for literary response and expression.
Standard 3: Students will read, write, listen, and speak for critical analysis and evaluation.
Standard 4: Students will read, write, listen, and speak for social interaction.
Math
In March 2005, the Board of Regents adopted a new Learning Standard for Mathematics and issued a revised Mathematics Core Curriculum, resulting in the need for the development and phasing in of three new Regents Examinations in mathematics: Integrated Algebra, Geometry, and Algebra 2/Trigonometry. These new Regents Examinations in mathematics will replace the Regents Examinations in Mathematics A and Mathematics B. Students must pass any one of these new commencement-level Regents Examinations in order to fulfill the mathematics Regents Examination requirement for graduation. The first administration of the Regents Examination in Integrated Algebra took place in June 2008 and the first administration of the Regents Examination in Geometry took place in June 2009. The first administration of the Regents Examination in Algebra 2/ Trigonometry will take place in June 2010. The Regents Examination in Algebra2/Trigonometry will be based on the content of the Mathematics Core Curriculum (Revised 2005).
Social Studies
The Social Studies Learning Standards are defined as the knowledge, skills, and understandings that individuals habitually demonstrate over time as a consequence of instruction and experience. New York State has five specific content areas for standards:
• History of the United States and New York
• World History
• Geography
• Economics
• Civics, Citizenship, and Government
Taken together, these content standards, their key ideas and the performance indicators, define the Learning Standards for Social Studies for all students.
