Result: Liberty 1, Middletown 2 (OT) The JV girls lost a hard fought game to Middletown in overtime. After a scoreless first half, Middletown scored in the second half. The team rallied and moved the ball effectively challenging every shot and fighting for possession of the ball. A brilliant pass from freshman Yarel Diaz Lopez found the foot of junior Valeria Cruz who notched the tying goal. The Redhawks’ passing allowed pressure to be placed on the Middletown goal keeper for the remainder of the half. Entering a 10 minute overtime period Middletown was awarded a penalty kick, which they were able to convert. A strong showing from Cassandra Porter in goal with eight saves.

Boys result: The Liberty Boys Varsity Cross Country team competed on a 2.8 mile course against Monticello, Sullivan West Eldred and Fallsburg with the LCSD boys recording the following times  Colin Dasraj: 18:18; Braedan Clark: 18:19; Angel Gomez: 20:53, Konnor Williams 21:46, Eli Desrochers 21:52. “The team has been working hard to compete and has proven that all of that hard work pays off!,” Coach Samantha Abplanalp said.

Result: Liberty 5, Margaretville 1. The game was under the lights in the Downsville Soccer Tournament. Francisco Gonzalez recorded a hat trick with his 3 well placed goals.  Jehu Abisair scored twice.  Luis Molina Gonzalez had 2 assists, with James Dworetsky and Gonzalez each providing an assist. Bryan Jimbo and Justin Simon split time in goal with Simon recording 2 saves. Dworetsky and Anthony Lemus led a strong defense.  The entire team contributed to the win. The team concludes tournament play with a 7 p.m. game on Saturday versus home team Downsville/Walton at  Downsville High School.

Result: Liberty 2, Downsville/Walton 1. The game was tied 1-1 after regulation play with Jehu Abisair recording Liberty’s lone goal.  In overtime, Captain Luis Molina Gonzalez was fouled while attempting to make a goal line play.  Captain Jackson Bustillo then converted on the penalty kick to win the game. Bryan Jimbo had two  saves in goal. Captain James Dworetsky and Anthony Lemus provided stellar defense in the win.   Dworstsky, Abisair James, Jehu and Francisco Gonzalez were named to the All-Star Tournament team.

2 p.m.: Girls Varsity Soccer vs. Monticello at Downsville Central School Jane Flannery Tournament
Result: Liberty 6, Monticello 0. Despite the rain, the Lady Redhawks were able to work together to create many scoring opportunities. Scoring for Liberty with one goal each were Brooke Bull, Sydania Foster and Audrey Krum. Scoring two goals to close out the game was Madysen Rielly. Assisting those goals were Sandra Hanofee, Angela Wheeler, Elizabeth Navarrete, Adriana Ponce, Stephanie Gomez Nivelo and Madelynn Stewart. Holding the opponent from advancing were defenders Brenna Mangan, Gabriella Gentile, Sophia Duarte, Carmela Burgio and Elizabeth Cruz. Giving the Liberty Redhawks their first shutout of the season was keeper Haylee Gomez.

New AD begins at Liberty Central School District

Kim Craft has joined Liberty Central School District as its athletic director, a position that was elevated to an administrative role starting in the 2024-25 school year.

Kim CraftCraft, an Ellenville resident, earned her bachelor’s degree from Sage College of Albany in K-12 physical education, a master’s degree in health, physical education and Recreation from Emporia State University and a Certification of Advanced Study in School Leadership from SUNY New Paltz.

Before coming to Liberty, Craft taught health and physical education for seven years at Crispell Middle School, part of the Pine Bush Central School District. She also coached basketball and softball.

She said she enjoys traveling, anything active or sports related, and spending quality time with family, friends and her dogs in her spare time.

“I am very excited to be a Liberty Redhawk,” Craft said. “I chose Liberty because I really enjoy the small school atmosphere where I will be able to get to know everyone. I also am very excited to work with the supportive and involved community that Liberty has to offer.”

She said she hopes to encourage more students to become student-athletes and ensure Liberty students are able to receive the opportunities they deserve.

Liberty High School honors athletes

The event honors the varsity scholar-athletes who participated in Liberty sports during the 2023-24 school year.

The ceremony began with a tribute to Javon Islam, who would have been a senior this year but passed away in May 2023. His football helmet, a baseball cap with his number, and a photo, which will be displayed in the school trophy case, were presented to his family.

Before the student-athlete awards began, Alvord recognized two longtime coaches, Anne and Carpio Ramos, who are retiring. Anne coached girls soccer from 2003 to 2023, and alpine ski from 2021-24, with Carpio coaching girls soccer for 25 years, starting in 1999, and alpine ski starting in 2013.

Student recognition began with the presentation of the new Redhawk award. Students who receive the award are chosen by their coaches for often working the hardest and demonstrating great sportsmanship, teamwork, dedication and commitment.

LES fourth-grade wrestler takes second in statewide event

Liberty Elementary fourth-grader Blake Dennison recently plac3e second in the NY Wrestling Association for Youth State Championships. He trains at Deep Roots Wrestling Club in Walden, three times a week, while excelling in his education and band. On Saturday, March 9, he traveled to Syracuse to compete in the D5 70-pound weight class, which had 30 competitors.

Annual tournament raises $200 for scholarship 

Liberty High School Physical Education Department held its annual Ron Francisco Ping Pong and Badminton Tournament on Thursday, Feb. 29, in the high school gymnasium.

TStudents and staff sit in the stands in a gymnasiumhere were more than 100 participants and almost 200 students and staff who watched, the largest since at least before COVID, Athletic Director Erin Alvord said.

“In the end, this was probably one of our best tournaments of all time. The students were organized, followed direction and were supportive of one another,” she said.

The champions were:

  • Girls Ping Pong: Julia Juron
  • Boys Ping Pong: Enrique Mercado
  • Staff Ping Pong: Gene Doyle (two years in a row, and was also champ when he was a student.)
  • Student Badminton: David Philips and Ben Visconti
  • Staff Badminton: Beth Quatrale and Liz Hannold.

The event, named in honor of a former PE teacher Ron Francisco, raised $200 for the memorial scholarship in his name. Two scholarships are awarded annual to seniors who have demonstrated positive character in PE classes and in their athletics.

Liberty ninth-grader competes in state ski championships

A skier poses for a photo.Liberty High School ninth-grader Hudson Danzilo traveled to Lake Placid to compete in the state Alpine Ski Championships, held Monday and Tuesday, Feb. 26 and 27.

Coaches Anne and Carpio Ramos traveled to Whiteface Mountain along with Hudson and his family. He practiced the Saturday and Sunday before the competition, and competed in the giant slalom on Monday and the slalom on Tuesday. Each skier got two runs and had to complete each run to place. Hudson completed all four runs to place 33rd out of 66 racers in the giant slalom and 23rd out of 66 racers in the slalom.

He started skiing when he was 15 months old, with help from his family, and could ski on his own at 2 years old, Liberty Athletic Director Erin Alvord said.

“We could not be more proud of Hudson and his hard work. Not only does he practice with the team, but he can often be found on the mountain in his personal time,” she said. “Hudson, your future is bright and we cannot wait to see what you bring to Alpine Ski in the next three years. Thank you for representing Liberty so well.”

Alvord also thanked the Ramoses and the members of the Fallsburg/Liberty/Tri-Valley ski team for their work with Hudson.

Two LHS wrestlers earn girls sectional titles

Liberty Central School District has two 2024 Section 9 Girls Wrestling Champions — Cheynne Graham and Zoe Kip.

Cheynne defended her title from 2023 with a headlock for the pin in the 185 class. She finished her season with a record of 12-6. She also earned a third place medal in the 2024 Girls Eastern States tournament and has a career record so far of 17-6.

In her third Section 9 championship finals appearance Zoe pinned her opponent for the 152 class title. She closed out her senior season with a record of 19-9. She was also a two time New York State Girls Invitational Placewinner finishing fourth and six, a two-time Girls Eastern States Medalist, with third place finishes both times and has a career record of 31-16 record against girls.

The Section IX Division II Boys and Girls Wrestling championships were held Sunday, Feb. 11, at F.D. Roosevelt High School.

Two Liberty athletes to compete at state girls wrestling event

Cheyenne Graham and Zoe Kip were chosen to compete in the NYSPHSAA girls’ wrestling invitational on Friday, Jan. 26, at Onondaga Community College. The two have been wrestling on the boys varsity team this season. Cheyenne, who was last year’s girls sectional champion, will compete in the 185 pound class. She has a record of 8-3 this season. Zoe, who will be competing in the 152 class, will make her second appearance in the state invitational. Her record is 12-6.
